Singer from Cameroon, Ange Ebogo Emerent recorded his first 7inch in 1974 with Orchestre Essian on Sonodisc.

Empire Bakuba - Mombembe (1976)

Nice soukous track from Empire Bakuba. This band takes his name from a pre-colonial african state, and was created in 1972 by singer Pepe Kalle (+1998), after playing with African Jazz, Bella Bella and Lipua Lipua from the 60s.

Nyatiti is the name of the eight-string lyre used in Luo region of Kenya (Lake Victoria area). The syncopated play of this traditional instrument inspired guitar players exploring electric instruments possibilities in the 60s, leading to a new major style in Kenya and Tanzania: Benga music.

Daniel Owino Misiani (1940-2006) was born in the Shirati region, on the Victoria Lake shore on the tanzanian side. Based in Nairobi from 1964, he was one of the principal musicians developing Benga, recording hits with Shirati Jazz Band during the 70s and 80s.

Musique sans paroles (SLP 54) (1976)

 

Let's stay around Conakry... This "Musique Sans Paroles" (music without world/lyrics) LP is not the most representative of Guinean music from the Syliphone state label from the 70s, but one of my favorites.

Among the varied and great tracks, I selected 2, first is a kind of joyfull ballad by Quintette Guinéenne (not to be mixed with Quintet Guinéen playing with Myriam Makeba) with a nice bewitching guitar melody. Then comes a wicked sounds exchange between Momo Wandel (Sourah) free jazz style saxophone and exhuberant and explosive percussions. Momo Wandel continued his musical carreer joining Circus Baobab (guinean company including acrobats and musicians) and composing original soundtracks (check the CD: “Momo Le Doyen” African BO - saphir 2007 / soundtracks of various african movies).
