Conjunto Papaupa and a brief glimpse on afro-venezuelan culture

Actual growing interest for "tropical" music provides a wide variety of projects and vinyl releases. Muzzicaltrips looked into a afro-venezuelan influenced project (Conjunto Papa Upa, from the Netherlands based label Musicwithsoul), a very good actual DJ friendly sound, loaded with interesting traditional elements. This was opportunity to exchange with the father of this project, Alex Figueira, a real music specialist on the (yet little documented) afro-venezuelan culture.

Palenque culture #01 Palenque de San Basilio
Palenque de San Basilio is a village not far from Cartagena (Colombia) which represents a really unique cultural space. At the dawn of the17th century, several groups of african slaves escaped from spanish settlers, building fortified villages called "palenques". San Basilio village, led originally by african king Benkos Bohio, is the only one who survived up to nowadays.
Pico Culture #03 - Mysterious records
In order to maintain exclusivity of tracks played on each pico (and thus gain loyalty of the public who has to go to the party to listen to specific exclusive hits), it was common to tear away or paint the label sothat no one could read the original track. The result is some really unique beautiful pieces, but also some unidentified hits (everyone knows the song but no one knows who was the artist, so the track is only known by his spanish surname). That's the case with the following 7" played by the pico El Dragon, but originally from the famous pico El Coreano.
Le Sahel Revival in Dakar!!! (ephemeral 70's band from Senegal)
This is a very special post as something big is happening in Dakar right now... The mythic band Le Sahel will play live again next this week.
Le Sahel, named from the club they were playing during the mid 70s, was composed by master musicians and mixed latin rhythms and sabar, giving birth to a unique senegalese style.
After more than 30 years, Dakar based label Teranga Beat, released some of 70s recordings from Idrissa Diop and Cheikh Tidiane Tall (including some never edited tracks!), and is now bringing this band back to life.

Gil Scott-Heron just died 2 days ago. In order to remember this major RAP (Rhythm And Poetry) figure, I just selected 5 tracks from my favorite albums: "Peace Go With You, Brother" for a spiritual funeral, "Who'll Pay Reparation On My Soul?" for the afro-american militancy, "Lady Day and John Coltrane" for the soul and jazz inspiration, "The Bottle" for the funky percussive groove.

Danson & Charanga Night, Dakar
Great party flyer, with DJs from the 60s-70s period in Dakar... latin records all night long! Probably the best place to perceive how much music from the other side of the atlantic ocean was (omni)present in urban Senegal. At this time, big part of DJs selections was cuban music arrived from the 50s through sailors. (It remains easier to dig latin records than african records in Dakar now). Dakar danced deacades to this latin (and caribbean) rhythms, which influenced deeply local musicians and productions.

Music Day in Paris: Keziah Jones and Franck Biyong street concert [2010]
I'm generally not big fan of Music Day in Paris (c'est la fete de la musique toute l'année!), but in such a case even skepticals would have enjoy...
I had memory of an "automatic pilot" promotion concert by Keziah Jones that disapointed me a bit, but we had tonight a kind a unique gig as taking place in a Paris street. What was great is that it was obvious they were here to have fun.
Keziah played some of his hits, in a pretty easy style way, but still knowing how to groove (well, the amazing bass player was able to make dance the whole street just by himself!). Rythm section injected african flavor during some percussive impro followed by Keziah singing and claiming nigerian influence...
Franck Biyong joined the band to give birth to a Voodo Child, followed by a jam on Fela'sLady sung by Keziah, a Blue Funk version with a kind of afrobeat horn section...
Great trip to have such a good afrogroove gig in the street. Big up.
Les Espoirs de Coronthie (tradition and modernity in Guinea)
This band comes from Guinea and is composed of 14 musicians and dancers. They are all Soussou (Mandingo ethnic group), they come from Coronthie, a popular neighbourhood of Conakry, and begun to play to together since they were young... a long musical trip from 1st Conakry "nijas" (musicians word corresponding to improvised concerts done in as many clubs as possible in the same night) to west african and european tours...
RIP Guru (1966-2010)
A small post dedicated to Keith Elam (Guru), died by 19/04/2010. West coast rap singer, he founded GangStarr in 1989 with DJ Premier.
The 1st Jazzmatazz project, presented in 1993 as "an experimental fusion of hip hop and jazz", is a musical gem (including prestigious featurings as Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, Lonnie Liston Smith), and open the way to deeper collaboration between rappers and jazzmen. Always good to remind that hip hop comes from jazz...

Best sound in town was defenitely at Dansoir Karine Soporta this weekend. Great old style wooden big top / chapiteau with top class dancefloor.
Special place for special music: Luck Steady invited Miles Cleret (soundway records) to share a bit of his unique collection of african and caribean vinyls with Paulo (superfly).
As expected, the selection was really heavy (you have to listen to that!) ... master digger gems, always good for dancefloor...
Hard to recognize a tune among these frenzy cumbias, trinidad funk, tumbele, ethio, brazilian... (also a huge track from chris mcgregor). Too many groovy rythms in one night and really perfect party for what the outdoor light announces: "danse et musique "
It was really cold outside, but all theses tropical vibes made inside so hot that it just would have deserved a bit more people to come discover and enjoy (but personnally i enjoyed dancing with enough space during some latin tracks). I am sure there will be more of these anyway...
Tracks (musical TV show from Arte) should broadcast something about Miles with an interview. Curious about it.
No sound on this post, better wash your ears going to these parties (some tunes you listen once in a life...)
